Fisher Island
Fisher Island is plainly the final word in luxury and magnificence. It is a 216-acre private island residential population that has few equals in the world.
A design of real estate developer Carl Graham Fisher, he focused his attention to this part of land when Miami's ship channel sliced through to the ocean in 1905. Fisher Island was bought from Dana A. Dorsey, South Florida's first black millionaire. Though, political force blocked Fisher's constant attempts to obtain state and federal dredging permits. The conflict raged into the 1930s.
The Island was initially built in the 1920's by William and Rosamund Vanderbilt to use as their winter escape from the cruel climate of the northeast. For the 21st century, Fisher Island has been restored and re-created to carry on its long record as a first-rate private island residence. The grandeur of the past is reborn in each feature of the neighborhood ambience and beauty. This is what Vogue magazine wrote: "Fisher Island is centered on the former mansion of William K. Vanderbilt, a 1920's confection used for wintering by the great grandson of the Commodore. There is no mistaking this isle for any other land form".
The Vanderbilt mansion forms the chief Island Club area with the exclusive Ocean Beach Club nearby. Close by is the Tennis Center. Some of the most special accommodations on the island are the stunning circa 1920's cottages and suites. Further down the road is the deep-water marina where yachts from all over the world come in to benefit from the amenities of Fisher Island. And what are some of those facilities?
As well the Tennis Center and beach resort, you will discover restaurants, spas, a golf course, everything to supply visitors and residents with that "Rich and Famous" lifestyle. Furthermore, the restaurants are not merely eating-places. Eight of Miami's superb fine dining and relaxed restaurants are on the property. The Spa Internazionale is rated as America's top ten by Town & Country Magazine. The Links is a celebrated championship golf course, combining stunning views with tricky golf in a exclusive, tropical setting. All of this is for the exclusive use of Fisher Island residents and guests. Fisher Island as well boasts its own polo field. A commercial and shopping center provides all the merchandise and services a local or guest may need.
Fisher Island Hotel & Resort is a favorite location of some of the world's most influential travelers. It has been chosen as Miami's Finest Resort Hotel by Zagat's Survey.
Fisher Island is merely 20 minutes from Miami's International Airport; 10 minutes away from Miami's business region and Miami's Design Area and 7 minutes away from Miami Beach.
